Tree or shrub: how to choose?
The practical distinction is size: trees have a defined main trunk and canopy above 3–4 metres; shrubs branch from the base and rarely exceed 3 metres. For small gardens or large balconies, shrubs are more versatile. For larger spaces needing vertical structure and shade, trees are irreplaceable. The key is respecting the adult size of the species. The most common mistake is planting a large species in a small space.
Ornamental trees for Portuguese gardens
For the Portuguese climate we recommend: Olea europaea (olive), Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree), Lagerstroemia indica, Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra', Jacaranda mimosifolia and Acer palmatum (Japanese maple). These are species with great ornamental value, adapted to our climate and with proven performance in national gardens.
Shrubs for structure and hedging
Shrubs are the best allies for creating borders, privacy and intermediate structure in the garden. We highlight: Viburnum tinus, Pittosporum tobira, Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin', Buxus sempervirens, Prunus laurocerasus and Eleagnus. These are evergreen species, resistant to wind and heat, ideal for formal and informal hedges.
Planting and first care
The success of a tree or shrub starts at planting. Tips: dig a hole twice the volume of the root ball, incorporate organic compost at the bottom and ensure the plant's collar is at ground level. Water abundantly in the first 2–3 months, even for drought-resistant species — the establishment period is critical. Stake trees in the first two years to ensure vertical growth.
