Choosing the right pots
The pot is as important as the plant. For outdoors, prefer materials that resist thermal variation: traditional terracotta, fibreglass or high-quality polyethylene. Avoid metal pots exposed to direct sun — they overheat and damage roots. Always ensure adequate drainage holes.
Ideal species for balcony and terrace
For full sun on balconies and terraces, we highlight: Bougainvillea, Plumbago auriculata, Lantana camara, Agapanthus, Lavandula and Pelargonium. For shadier areas: Fuchsias, Impatiens, Begonias and Heucheras. On windy balconies, choose compact species with deep roots.
Substrate and fertilisation in pots
In pots, substrate is depleted faster than in the ground. Use quality universal substrate with perlite (20%) to improve drainage. Fertilise from March to September with slow-release liquid fertiliser, fortnightly. Tip: Renew the substrate every 2 years.
Efficient watering in pots
Pots dry out faster than soil. In summer, some species need daily watering. Install an automatic drip irrigation system if you have many pots — it saves time and water, and plants grow more evenly. Extra tip: always water early in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid excessive evaporation.
