Partial shade or full shade?
Before choosing, it's worth understanding the type of shade in your space. Partial shade means 2 to 4 hours of direct sun per day — most shade plants tolerate these conditions very well. Full shade (less than 2 hours of direct sun) requires more specialised species. Indoors, the logic is similar: light filtered through glass is very different from a room with no windows.
Outdoor species for shady areas
For gardens and terraces with little direct sunlight, we recommend: Hydrangeas (Hydrangea), Hosta, Royal Fern (Osmunda), Hellebores, Liriope muscari, Carex and Acanthus mollis. These are super aesthetic plants: textured foliage, vibrant flowers — that adapt well to the Portuguese climate in shade.
Indoor plants for low-light spaces
For indoor rooms with limited light, the best options are: Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Aspidistra elatior, Sansevieria, Dracaena, Pothos and Aglaonema. These species are robust, low-maintenance and maintain their vitality even away from windows.
Specific care for shade plants
In low-light environments, plant metabolism is slower — meaning they absorb less water and nutrients. Tip: water less frequently, avoid overly nutrient-rich substrates and make sure pots have good drainage. Outdoors, a layer of mulching helps retain soil moisture and regulate root temperature.
