What makes a plant dangerous for animals?
Some natural compounds in certain plants — such as calcium oxalates, alkaloids or saponins — can cause irritation, vomiting or more serious problems in dogs and cats if ingested. Plants to avoid if you have animals
Among the most common houseplants, some are especially problematic: Dieffenbachia, Philodendron, Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), Pothos and all Lilium species are toxic to cats. Zamioculcas and Ficus also appear on warning lists. If you already have them, keep them out of reach of animals.
Safe and equally beautiful plants
There are many non-toxic alternatives with great decorative value: Calathea, Maranta, Peperomia, Haworthia, Echeveria, Chlorophytum comosum and all Bromeliads are safe for dogs and cats according to the ASPCA. They are accessible, easy-care plants with notable visual presence.
How to organise space with animals
Even with safe plants, it's good practice to create some physical separation between plants and animals in rest areas. Hanging pots, high shelves and vertical gardens are elegant solutions that protect the plants and keep the space organised.
